  1. Beautiful, beautiful Staggering Beech 5 Star Review

Posted by on 5th May 2015

I recently purchased the Roc Hobby Staggering Beech from Motion RC, based on other positive reviews and videos, and I was not disappointed. I spent a pleasant two evenings building and rigging it. The scale details are just fantastic, and I took the advice of another reviewer and coated the whole thing with satin spray, Minwax polycrylic. Also, although the rigging is a bit tedious, just put a dab of CA on each knot before you stretch and attach the springs. Oh, BTW, I bought some steel 1/4" by 1/4" machine keys in various lengths from my local hardware store and installed them inside the cowling w glue to get the CG just right. Remember, nose heavy you can fly --- tail heavy is uncontrollable. If you love scale and the special planes of yesteryear, you really need this one.

  2. Sweet Staggerwing 4 Star Review

Posted by on 22nd Apr 2015

The build was simple and straight foreword. Had no trouble with the rigging. I pulled the knots tight on the springs and put a drop of CA on them and it worked perfect. I have several flights on it now. I am using a 3s 2200 mah battery and the CG is dead on. This plane flies fantastic! A couple clicks of trim and she was set. Tracks true and straight. It also handles wind with ease. I flew the other day in steady 8 to 10 mph winds and she cut right through it. Flaps work nicely. Make sure you go by the instructions and set it up using the throw rates they list. Don't go beyond the high rate. It will make it hard to control and it is not necessary. I have it set up with dual rates and 30% expo. The plane does beautiful rolls and will also fly slow if desired. It has plenty of power for nice climb outs and some nice aerobatics. The flying field we us is grass and I found it does not do well on grass that is above typical mowing height. The first landing took both wheel mounts right off. The glue they use is not strong and very sparse. I did a quick 5 min epoxy fix at the field and sent her back up. They have held up good since. Be careful if you come in too hard it may bend the the struts back a bit. They could be a little beefier. However I can't blame it all on the plane. It likes smoother runways. However I love this plane. All in all very pleased with it and you can't get one that flies better. It's a real eye catcher at the field and the retracts make it look awesome. Thank you Motion RC for the fast shipping and a great plane!

  3. Beautiful plane 4 Star Review

Assembly went well. Had to add 2 oz. of weight in cowl. Removed cowl, shaved foam enough to put lead in then replaced cowl. 2200 3s fits like it was made for it. nice tight fit with no velcro or anything to hold it in place. Flight-wise, the plane is beautiful in the air. Will do anything. Flies inverted as easy as upright. Landing gear is a little weak and wheels a little small for grass fields but works fine if careful. Other pilots impressed with bip with retracts. Cool plane.

  4. Love This Staggering! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Apr 2015

I have about a dozen flight on this plane now. Wow, what a great flying plane! I'm used to flying warbirds, and wanted something a little slower, less demanding and relaxing. This is the perfect plane for just that!

I'm flying with 2200 3S batteries, and have the timer set at 7:30. I'm putting around 1600 mAh back in the battery, so I have plenty of juice left. Most of my flights are 3-4 clicks back from WOT. It'll fly at ½ throttle with flaps a mid point, and it'll move out much faster than I expected at WOT. Roll rates are slow and graceful, and vertical is far from unlimited. This is not a complaint, it is a biplane, not an EDF jet, after all.

Fit, finish and detail are a 9/10. The nav lights are pretty bright, assembly was a little longer than normal due to two sets of wings. I love the removable front seats, attached with a magnet, that move out of the way to instal the battery. Pretty slick feature. I painted the tops of the wingtips a light dove gray, about the first two inches, for help with orientation. Helped a lot, and looks pretty cool too.

The best thing about the plane is how well it handles grass landing strips. ROG and landing on grass is a non event. The gear are raked, and way forward of CoG, so it'll taxi out and land on grass, no problem. I love taking off, doing a few circuits, land and taxi back. Do a 180, and repeat. Too much fun!

The only down side is it appears the motor board (firewall) is a little weak. I had a mild nose over while taxing when I hit a hidden bump in the grass. Nothing major, or so I thought until I took off. The Beech had developed a definite vibration, so I landed. Found the motor board cracked when I pulled the cowl. I gooped it up with epoxy, and it appears to be holding. Not enough of a problem to take away a star, but it is something to be aware of.

On the fence with this Staggering? Don't be, it's a winner! You get retracts, flaps, and nav lights for $180.00 It's a no brainer, add it to cart and you'll be one happy 1940's pilot!

PS: Hit up wikipedia or other articles on the inter-web to learn some history of this plane. Fascinating stuff. Happy Flying!

  5. It's the little things... 4 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Apr 2015

Easily a 5 star plane if RocHobby cleans up the little things. Clevises kept breaking, very soft, finally just threw them all away and installed new ones. Top wing was a pain to install! Could not get the two back screws to easily go in, finally took the wing off and found flashing in the plastic holes that I cleaned out and then the screws went in fine. Could not get the two pins in the front of the wing to go into the female alignment holes. Needed to scrape the paint off the male and female alignment holes and then the wing would finally slide all the way forward. The rest of the build was great! Everything had a nice fit and finish was very good. I have not had a chance to fly this yet but the plane looks great and with 2 coats of minwax satin acrylic varnish it looks amazing!

  6. It is a Staggerwing 4 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Mar 2015

Looks great with no extra dressing up needed. It will get going fast and will fly faster than a regular biplane. After all, it was designed to get you there quick (back in the day). The only problems I had was to open up the battery compartment about 3/32 inch to get a 2200 battery in. It still needed a half ounce in the nose to balance. Three of the clevises broke on installation. I replaced all of them. The wing "wire" rigging took longer to install than the rest of the build but was worth it. The flaps help but do not back off the throttle too much while landing. Fly it in for a two point gorgeous landing.

  7. Looks to be High Quality 5 Star Review

Posted by on 18th Mar 2015

I have not flown this plane yet but I have a put it together and I am impressed with the overall quality. It appears to be very heavy duty. I think I will take it to my club and have one of the experienced members take it up and trim it out and then when I get a little more experience I will fly it. Right now I don't want to try to fly it and destroy it, the plane is too nice.

  8. ROC ON' 5 Star Review

Posted by on 18th Feb 2015

I've been flying this bipe since June. This is my 6th bipe and ranks right up there. It looks good just sitting there at the field. Always gets the looks and audience when it's up. The landing gear on a bipe really sells it.
I know for certain at least two other club members bought one from MRC after seeing this one. It's is impressive. Easy build.
Good speed, good control, very aerobatic, flaps slow it down to a crawl. Good strong prop, well built. I think the retracts could be a little better. Actually I think they should start making all the landing gears shock absorbing. It really helps.
Still I give it 5 stars. Don't make this a first plane though, it may not be too forgiving. It looks sweet up there cruising around with gear up! A bipe with retracts?? cool.

  9. Roc Hobby Stagger Wing 3 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Nov 2014

When I was looking for a smaller plane to take to the field the stagger wing caught my eye. After receiving the plane and opening the box it looked great until build time. The wing mounts in my opinion need to be stronger or at least reinforced-top and bottom I realize that it's just a foam plane but they could of done a better job in that area of design.
Everything else went together very well the only thing that I would suggest is to check all pre-installed fasteners for tightness especially the landing gear screws…they were all loose.
Other than that it's a great little plane.

  10. Great Plane. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 26th Nov 2014

I love bipes and was looking for a plane with flaps and retracts when I found the Staggerwing. Beautiful plane. Easy build and best of all a great flier.

Here is a video of my maiden flight:

  11. great looking Stagerwing 5 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Oct 2014

    received package quickly and intact.
the plane went together easily and quickly, and all functions worked . I will be installing a 3 axis gyro before maiden flight. I also added the wing rigging but did use the supplied springs. all in all a great looking plane, and as usual great price and service from MOTION RC.
since I have not flown it, I cannot comment on the flight characteristics.

  12. Great plane in amazing detail 4 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Oct 2014

I got this plane as a transition airraft from gliders to electric power. Exceipt for a few small errors in translation on the directions it was easy to assemble.
One bit of warning on first flight. The plane does tend to tourque roll on the take off. It's not a problem if you are expecting it but the first few times I couldn't fingure out what I was doing wrong. Once I over came that tendancy, It's been a great flyer.

  13. Lots of Potential 3 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Sep 2014

Out of the box this Staggerwing gets 3 to 3.5 stars not because she in mundane rather because what else is out there is better, out of the box. But with a little rework she can become a 5 star master piece!

Lets get the negatives out of the way. The foam hinges are delicate and are poorly designed (they bind if the surface is moved very far). I used Robart hinge points (sold by Motion RC) to correct the robustness and hinge geometry issues.

The stab is too flexible. The molded in spars should meet at the fuselage center line. Add some 3mm carbon tube to join the two sides of the stab.

Now what really hampers this model is the front end. There is way too much down thrust! I had to remove 3° of down thrust using Ernst thrust shims between the motor and the firewall. I found that there is 50 grams of dead weight added to the nose. I removed these slugs and replaced this mass with a larger battery (3300 mAh 276 grams). I had to add some air cooling passages to the battery compartment as the battery fit tight (no airflow).

Thinking that the need of so much down thrust was as a result of some trim issue I sanded the rear of the stab mount 1.5mm for some down stab trim.

The last setup change was moving the aileron servo arms one splin forward so that they pointed about 30° forward with the ailerons centered. This gives close to 1.5:1 aileron differential (more up than down movement).

With the above mods and setting the Center of gravity aft another 5mm (65mm from the leading edge) makes for a very nice flying Staggerwing that shows little trim change as the speed changes.

I was pleasantly surprised at how little elevator compensation was needed with flap down at 15° and 45° (possible with the Robart hinges). She lands best on her mains. I have yet to make a graceful 3 point landing

I will say that Testors Acryl Model Master paint Guards Red #4632 is a very close match to the factory red. Great for touching up some of the lighter (pink) areas of the model.

I hope ROC Hobbies makes most of these correction in their next production run of this fine stately aircraft.

Add 2 hours of work to your Staggerwing and you will have a 5 star model both on the ground and in the air!

  14. She's a kepper 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Jun 2014

Plane looks & fly's great. Very easy build with spare parts. Unfortunatly on maiden had crash do too a bad clevice on one side of elevator. stripped out during flight took a hard dive into pavement. On my examination to find problem noticed clevice on one side of elevator was just sliding on pushrod. That side was in down position other side was neutral. Was able too fix wings and ordered new cowl prop spinner windshield & motor shaft. Would recommend better clevices. Dubro's would be better but will have to change pushrods do too size differince in threads. Minor upgrade still makes her a keeper. fly's & looks amazing in the sky. Also I painted white stripes on bottom of wings for better orientation. Thanks MRC for still a great plane and fast delivery. Happy flying everyone.

  15. Wow, the Beech Staggerwing beautiful and flys out of the box. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Jun 2014

I took my new Beechcraft Stagger wing biplane to this years SEFF event.
I happened to met Rich Baker of RC Informer putting together a couple planes for the event. I told Rich I had just purchased the RocHobby Staggerwing from Motion RC, but had flown it yet. Rich said he knew of the model but had not had a chance to fly one yet. I got brave and asked Rich if he would help me and be the pilot for the maiden flight. Rich was so nice and informative, he provide a complete pre-flight inspection of the biplane. We went to the flight line and Rich provided that first flight and the model flew beautifully. It provides great eye candy flying down the field with the wheels retracted. I had a club member yelling at me; the wheels fell off. LOL
