  1. Came up short on the speed 4 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Nov 2015

First, shipping was fast. (got it in about 3 days). It was packaged well and had no damages. The build was also fast, taking about an hour. There was only two items to glue on, the rest was bolted/screwed together. This model flies very well....Especially in slow flight - it is very stable. It has literally unlimited vertical, and can do turns at full throttle .

I only have two negative things to say about the plane:
    1) On my model - All of the control horns had holes that were too small for the clevis, and had to be drilled out. Not a huge deal, but you would think someone at the factory would catch that. It looked liked they attached the wrong clevis to the link-rods.
    2) My sample is no where near as fast as advertised. Plenty of sources list this plane as hitting 85-90mph with the 4 blade prop. Mine does more like 55-60 with a 4cell 2650mah 25c battery. It will do about 65 with a 2200mah, 40c battery.

I called Motion, and was told to check the timing setting on the ESC and try a different brand of battery. (I was using the Turnigy brand).
I have not had a chance to try either of these yet, but am hopeful the battery change will pump it up some.

Overall though, even with the slower speed, I would still give this plane (and Motion RC) a thumbs-up and list it as a recommended buy.

  2. Super Strega 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Oct 2015

Fantastic flyer!! Great Speed..Flies smooth and solid..One just has to be aware how fast it goes and adjust accordingly.. One fun and great plane to fly!!!! Highly recommend it...My favorite plane to fly also...

  3. Real Nice for a foamy 4 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Oct 2015

I am a balsa & Ply airplane fan. Been unable to locate a Balsa version of the Strega so I decided to try the Roc Hobby Strega Foam. Impressed with the fit and finish. Great looking plane on the ground and in the air. Hardware is marginal for a plane with the potential to exceed 100mph. Went together with no issues. First flight with 4 blade prop was a great success (very quiet). A careful application of power and right rudder is needed to make a good center-line take off. Immediately upgraded to the 11x12 prop and it notably improved the speed. Estimate 95 mph. Flight characteristics are solid and no bad tenancies. Good solid performer. Clearly faster than most other foamies in this class due to the relative clean air-frame. I always make a wheel landing with full flaps and a bit of power. Just before touch down kill the power and let it roll until the tail settles. Very High fun factor!
I set the CG per the instructions and have since found that the CG is very forgiving. Not an issue as some people have noted. Motion RC provided quick response and good communication through the order delivery process.
If the RC gods are listening, please provide a 52" balsa-ply version of the Strega.

  4. Great plane, but had lots of problems 4 Star Review

Posted by on 30th Sep 2015

I've owned the Strega for about 6 months. When it flies, it's an awesome plane. However, that's the problem, it spends most of its time on the bench. In the six months I've owned it, I've flown it less than 20 times due to constant problems.

When I first got it, one of the aileron servos was bad, straight out of the box. MotionRC wanted to just replace the servo, which would involve digging it out of the wing and reinstalling it, but eventually they agreed to replace the entire wing (the plane had not been flown).

Next, I've gone through 3 motors. The first motor lasted 6 flights before the magnets dislodged and it could not be flown again. MotionRC replaced that motor free of charge. The replacement motor lasted just 3 flights, before it too threw a magnet. I'm on my third motor now. So far, I have 8 flights on this, third, motor. If you look at the reviews of the motor, you'll see that this is a common problem with this motor.

I took the Strega to the field to fly it today, and lo-and-behold, one of the landing gear retracts has stopped working! I never even got to fly it today! It's not binding, it just isn't working! I already have a set of replacement retracts coming, as it seems like a handy thing to have "just in case"... but I wasn't expecting a failure today before I even got to fly it. I guess, in a way, I'm lucky that it happened on the ground, not in the air, but still..!

When it *does* fly, it's a great plane. It's rock steady in the air and, as the saying goes, it flies like it's on rails. After initial setup, it needed ZERO trim to fly straight and level. None! Note, the CG in the manual is wrong. The balance point is on the back corner of the plastic gear cover on the top side of the wing, closest to the fuselage and trailing edge (when looking at the left wing from above, it would be the right-rear corner of the panel).

I recently switched to a 2-bladed prop (11x12, which is cut down from a 12x12), but everything else is stock. I use Admiral 50C 4S batteries. I used my pocket radar and measured the speed at 94mph straight and level, and 108mph from a moderate dive. It sounds fantastic as it zooms past!

Now, if only it were more reliable so that I could take it to the field more than twice at a time before having to repair or replace parts.

  5. fantastic...!!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Sep 2015

it flies away fast - ended up (soft) landing maiden flight in a soybean field (pilot error of letting it go too far and difficult to see it with the sun behind the plane). To my surprise it came out with a small dent on the wing (purely cosmetic).

I've had 20+ "uneventful" flights since then and what a buy...!!! Vertical is unlimited (literally speaking) and there is no wing flex whatsoever ... speed takes some getting used to but i love it after i got a measure of it... been doing 100-200 feet drops on the split s and it flies down like its on rails.

I'm flying with 4s 2500 and getting easy 5 minutes of aggresive flight + landing (and still have enough juice for another 1-2 minuets).

MotionRC's customer service was awesome -- i had a problem with the main wing out of the box and they replaced it on the first call. Thanks guys.

  6. Speedster than can take deep turns 4 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Jul 2015

Have finally gotten the Plane dialed in & have put it through its paces.
1.Hard raked turns at speed are predictable, no departures/wing drops, minimal wing flexing!
    2. Does have a minimal yawing going on sometimes at speed
    3. Lands best/most predictably at half flap.. not full!
    4. Can take large to small Packs, no difference in handling noticed (I used 2500 50C) to 3700mah 50C)
    5. 4 Blade prop are marginally out of balance, should be balanced for best results.
    6. Buy a few extra's props before you even fly as any 4 blade prop will break in nose over
    6. CG listed is very very wrong, I went 1" forward to Settle the plane down. Spent initial flights just fighting tail heavy condition till I read correct position. Note by Motion should be included in box on this!
    7. Get another P51 as one ain't enough & better to have 2 .. so there's enough to take you through summer
    8. Can we have a warbird P51D version of this model please Motion?

  7. Nice 4 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Jul 2015

Flies really well and unlimited vertical. I feel it's pretty plain on detail compared to other FMS planes

  8. A good plane to have 5 Star Review

Posted by on 15th Jun 2015

Actually this is my 2nd one my other was in the back of my truck as I was going to the airfield and blew out of the back very badly damaged decided to buy another one and keep the first one as extra parts.... I think the second one actually flies better than the first

  9. Flies like a boss. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Jun 2015

Very cool airplane flies like it has a system in it this is great flying P51 I put a 3200 and i also fly it with a 4000 flies like a boss.

  10. ZOOMS!!! 4 Star Review

Posted by on 21st May 2015

Watch what happens when you throw a 4000mAh 4S Lipo in there with a 10 x 12 propeller (cut-down 12 x 12)! Don't take your eyes off of this baby...it MOVES! Rock solid, predictable, performance! The only thing I noticed is the gear, when down, has toe-out...easily corrected to the appropriate amount of toe-in for smooth ground handling. I put a slightly smaller diameter spinner on mine to help force air inside the cowl to help cool the motor. Never ceases to amaze me the level of detail being achieved with foam these days! MotionRC is spectacular to deal with, fair prices, responsive, and has exceptional customer service personnel!

  11. Awsome plane 5 Star Review

Posted by on 24th Apr 2015

The plane got here in perfect shape, the paint and decals are just perfect, the plane parts all fit just like there supposed to and it went together just fine, great looking plane and the power of the motor is scary fast. had a minor issue with motor on my maiden flight but Motion Rc took care of it with out any problem, looking forward to my next purchase of the B25 bomber.

  12. OMG it's my new favorite plane!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Apr 2015

just picked this up and i have to say out of the box this mustang is sweet!! everything went to together perfect and setup was a breeze! This plane is without a doubt my favorite one, it flys like butter and handles like it's on rails when flying wide open. Motion Rc thanks for the awesome service and great plane!!

  13. Outstanding!! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 1st Apr 2015

This plane is an outstanding plane! It flies like it is on rails and like all FMS/RocHobby planes, it went together like a dream. I own 11 Rc planes most of them by FMS and have never had an issue with them. Out of my eleven planes, this plane moved straight into first place as my favorite with outstanding speed, aerobatic abilities, and amazing scale looks. It's a great price for what you get and I recomend it for anyone who has experience flying fast and agile planes. This plane is amazing therefore it deserves five stars!

  14. Awesome plane--but. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 30th Jan 2015

Got this plane for our Grandson for Christmas.
A week later when we opened the box, first thing we saw
was the rudder was separated!(hinge), so called cust. service
and they were GREAT! Sent us the parts for repair. Then when we finally go to fly, found the "tailwheel' was spinning free. 2nd call to cust service, and they wanted to send a set screw instead of replacing the plane. heck with that!Fixed ourselves, and plane is just awesome!
We rate the plane 5 stars, but Quality control gats 1 star!
