Dynam PBY Catalina Grey V2 1470mm (57") Wingspan - PNP - DY8943PNP-GREY

This is the new and improved version (V2) of the Dynam PBY Catalina Grey. This new version now includes Tomcat Skylord 30 Amp ESCs with XT60 connectors, and all new LED navigation lighting with LED control board (no more bare leads). The Consolidated PBY Catalina was an American flying boat, and later an amphibious aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s produced by Consolidated Aircraft. It was one of the most widely used seaplanes of World War II. Catalinas served with every branch of the United States Armed Forces and in the air forces and navies of many other nations.

During World War II, PBYs were used in anti-submarine warfare, patrol bombing, convoy escorts, search and rescue missions (especially air-sea rescue), and cargo transport. The PBY was the most numerous aircraft of its kind and the last active military PBYs were not retired from service until the 1980s. Even today, nearly 80 years after its first flight, the aircraft continues to fly as a waterbomber (or airtanker) in aerial firefighting operations all over the world.

Months of flight testing and design from Dynam yield an aircraft that is very stable and capable of maintaining flight at slow speeds that allow novices to master flight mechanics with ease. High quality scale detail and a nice large 1.4m wingspan make this an attention-grabbing model. Made from a high strength EPO-foam for added durability. Powered by twin 1100KV electric brushless motors, all you need is a 4 channel radio, 4 channel receiver and 3S 11.1V 2200-3000 mAh Li-Po battery and you're ready for water-based sorties and patrols!

Product Updates:

  • January 15, 2019  -  The instruction manual states 80-85mm CG from the wing's leading edge. The illustration incorrectly states 60-65mm. The proper CG for this model is in fact 80-85mm.
  • November 8, 2014  - You have to solder on your own connector in order to Y-harness the lights into another channel or nearby servo. Also for the RTF version make sure the included Detrum receiver/gyro is securely mounted to the fuselage before attempting to fly this airplane.

CG?

Instruction say cg =60 to 65mm on the picture instructions. Written instruction below picture says cg = 80 to 85mm. Set plane up every thing ready to go. Have flown numerous 4ch -5ch planes including mustangs no problem. plane unflyable crashes pontoons lost in ocean. Slots in wing show little or no glue holding pontoons. Now must order new pontoons $20 or may choose to pull the plug on this frustrating plane.... Too bad love the looks of it went together well. safety warnings over esc worrysome. Was hoping the flying boat configuration would be less likely to tip over during taxi but this one is worse than a regular plane with pontoons mounted to the fuse.

creating a custom coast guard pby

Dynam products are good value for the money. MotionRC is always very good to work with. If i were to make a recommendation on an airplane, it would be the Rochobby Waco. Its the plane that really taught me how to fly. Acrobatic yet forgiving its a great plane.

Solid offering with good detail

I bought this plane as a development tool for my 1/11 scale scratch-built fully amphibian PBY-5A. The plane is getting scaled-down versions of my retract design being used in the larger project. The float supports have been easily modified to be retracting, and the fuselage will support the water-tight compartments I am adding for the nose and main retracts. By programming differential throttle for the motors, I have eliminated the wet rudder that was provided with the plane and kills the otherwise nice scale appearance. For info concerning the scale and what size wheels to use: Dynam Catalina Scale is as follows: 1/21.2 overall scale. Scale Wing: 1/21.6 Scale Length: 1/20.7 Mainwheel diameter should be 2.25 inches. Nosewheel diameter should be 1.375 inches. A good out-of-the-box plane with only minor issues requiring attention, most notably the elevator joining and slippage.

Great product

When I received the item I found it to be very well packaged. Instructions did leave alot to be desired. Hardware needs to be labeled. Other than that it was a very fast build. Can't wait till the weekend to do the first flight

This the second PBY I

This the second PBY I purchased and it is well made. I scattered the first one around the yard. I hope to do better with this one. Thanks to Motion RC for quick and reliable service. Gil H. .

Not For beginners.

I like the plane over all. I had one hard landing and after I thought I had fixed it the plane began to propus. It would try to have the nose go up in way which made me think it was a tail problem. I can't get the new parts I need so I plan to replace with another PBY while I try to figure out my overall problem. I attempted to bring it back in while it was having the propussing problem but it stalled at 5 feet and went down. Still looks ok but it may just become a display. I do like how it flies and wish they would continue to make parts for it. It is easy to hand launch and lands on short grass with no problems. I strongly recommend people to pay close attention to how long they have been in the air to avoid dead stick landings or crashs.
