The Grumman F7F Tigercat is a twin piston engine aircraft developed during World War II. Originally envisioned as a carrier-based naval fighter, the Tigercat underwent several iterations and was later optimized for a variety of roles. Although World War II ended before it became fully combat operational, many variants of the Tigercat went on to serve in the Korean War in capacities including as a night fighter, ground attack platform, and a dependable reconnaissance platform.
Honoring this famed aircraft, Motion RC is proud to introduce the FlightLine F7F-3 Tigercat, which is the world’s first mass production foam electric RC Tigercat. Officially licensed by Northrop Grumman, the FlightLine F7F-3 Tigercat’s 1600mm wingspan and 1/10 sport scale matches our popular P-38 Lightning, and the two look excellent in flight formation together! In the air, the FlightLine F7F-3 Tigercat exhibits fantastic stability, is very easy to control at a wide speed range, and has a predictable stall with easy recovery. We designed this aircraft to be a superb balance between top speed, vertical performance, flight duration, convenient transport, sport scale realism, and overall scale presentation.
Design - Meticulously designed to incorporate EPO foam, wood, plastic, and carbon reinforcements, our design is easy to assemble and maintain, and delivers the strength and power to satisfy any RC airplane pilot. The main wing halves, horizontal stabilizer, and two engine nacelles each install with four screws. A new pliable ribbon wiring harness simplifies each wing connection to one instead of five. The antenna and gun barrels are also designed to easily slide out to prevent damage during transport. A plastic nose cone, cowls, and doors are designed for longevity. The generously sized battery bay can accommodate your batteries, receiver, and optional gyro in a cleanly organized layout. To ensure a secure fit, the cockpit of this FlightLine F7F-3 Tigercat is held on by both magnets and a sliding latch. The FlightLine F7F-3 Tigercat arrives with dependable electronics pre-installed, and every servo in the aircraft is a Digital Metal Gear servo. The aircraft uses our DayBright 3W LEDs for visibility. Static wingtip lights remain on, and the single landing light turns on only when the landing gear is down, for ultimate realism like the full scale aircraft. Four sets of adhesive vinyl decals are also included in the box. Choose from these decals or recreate your own historic livery as you wish!
Performance - The F7F-3’s generous main wing area allows a short takeoff distance of 15-20 meters, and its 70mm diameter nose wheel and 80mm diameter main wheels and thick steel struts are excellent for operating on typical grass airfields. An optional aluminum compression strut upgrade is available for rougher grass conditions. The Tigercat’s tricycle landing gear reduces the risk of tipping forward after landing and makes taxing on the ground very stable. Four flaps slow the aircraft for controlled power on landings at low speed. For efficient power, the aircraft features a pair of 3748-600kv brushless motors, 3-blade 12x7 propellers (Standard and Reverse rotation), and two 60A ESCs. The model’s top speed is 125kph/78mph, and comfortable flight duration ranges between 6 and 7 minutes on a pair of 4s 3000mAh lipo batteries. For even faster speeds approaching 155kph/97mph and extended vertical performance, an optional Sport Power System utilizing 3648-880kv motors and 2-Blade 12x8 propellers is available for separate purchase. Nice model and very sturdy. Flys smoothly.
Wing Area Question sent to me...... What is the wing area
Never calculated the wing loading. It is a heavy airplane but flies great. Just make sure to have lots of take-off speed and power on. Don’t be timid.
The F7 app is a great flying twin. It’s a great RC airplane. This is my “third” F7F. F7F-1 and F7F-1a became packing peanuts because of electrical problems. As I said it’s a great twin, but it’s also a complex RC aircraft which needs constant attention and preventive maintenance (just like a full-size airplane) to insure that critical components (electronic/electrical) do not fail causing conversion of a beautiful Tigercat into packing peanuts. Always check the integrity of the electronic connections prior to flight during your preflight. Bad connections caused the demise of my first Cat (took two crashes to total the Cat). I’m now on number 3 and intend to keep her around for a long time- she flies that great. My only gripe relates to the “decals.” I use graphics from Callie but decided to use the stock red ‘Propeller - Danger’ markings and was disappointed in the quality. Had to use canopy glue to get it to adhere - can’t compare to Callie’s graphics. Otherwise, well worth getting if you’re into twin & warbirds.
Very nice scale plane.
The Tigercat is an easy to fly model, great quality!
Don’t buy this plane
Love the looks of this plane especially with Callie graphics but have waited a month for replacement spinners that failed due to small amount of loctite wicking onto back of hub. The ONLY reason that happens was I broke reverse rotation prop on maiden and waited so long on replacement prop I decided to reverse reverse rotation on that motor and try right hand prop and since factory screw had blue loctite (dry type) I assumed it was a good idea to use small amount of blue loctite when reapplying spinner screw. Not happy with this purchase overall due to availability of very key spare parts.
Major Disappointment- Revisited
I am remiss in taking so long to write this followup review. After I wrote the review titled Major Disappointment, I received a very short message from MRC to let me know that the ship container had arrived and my parts would be sent to me very soon. Sure enough, I received another message letting me know that they had been shipped and within a very few days, they arrived. MRC had expedited the shipping. NOW THAT IS CUSTOMER SERVICE. Thank you MRC Unfortunately, when the parts arrived, so did bad weather here in Texas, so we will be hit-and-miss for the rest of the winter. So it is time to Build, Repair, and Upgrade the Inventory. Sorry to see that MRC has exausted their inventory of the F7F's That plane is a real winner. ED
flying ,a dream both props same rotation (tractor) It,'s a myth to have counter rotating props to add stability.
This is a beautiful airplane and it flies like a dream. It has major WOW appeal. But if you happen to break a prop, make sure that it is not the Reverse prop!!!! The reason? Replacement Reverse props are on back order and will not likely be available for 4-6 weeks, according to Customer Service. I have been unable to find a substitute or work around. CS also cautioned against changing the rotation on the reversed engine because the plane does not fly well with both props turning the same direction. So there goes our good flying weather for that plane this year. Very disappointing. If you find another source for Reverse Props, please let me know. ED
