E-flite ICON A5 BNF Basic 1330mm (52") Wingspan - BNF - EFL5850

At Motion RC we offer our customers a diverse selection of seaplanes but none of them quite as unique as this exhilarating, incredibly fun and rewarding ICON A5 by E-flite.  Take to your local pond, lake or shore and unleash pure flying enjoyment.  The ICON A5 comes with removable landing gear so this aircraft is at home both by land and by sea.  This BNF (Bind-N-Fly) version comes with a receiver that also acts as a stabilizing gyro for an even more rock-solid, smooth flying experience not even phased by moderate winds. The guys at Motion RC highly recommend the optional nose light kit for an even better flying experience.

Updated Icon A5 now with AS3X®

For those of you who remember the old Parkzone Icon A5, this is an updated version of that old plane. This new E-Flite version of the Icon A5 includes a new scale paint scheme, AS3X technology with panic recovery, an optional realistic nose light set, and SAFE select technology which can be enabled or disabled. Gone are the problems with the old Parkzone model (such as tail wag) due to subtle tweaks and AS3X 3 axis gyro technology. Additionally this model includes SAFE select which allows panic recovery with the push of a button should you get into trouble while flying. Lastly, this model does include SAFE flight envelope stabilization should you choose to turn it on. When turned on it will limit the bank of the plane to help someone new to water takeoffs and landings.

Removable Landing Gear

If you prefer to takeoff and land on water, simply remove the landing gear. If you prefer to takeoff and land on grass, landing gear is included in the box. The wheels are perfect for pavement but not large enough for grass takeoff and landings.

Great Starter Water Plane

The A5 is a great replica of the original aircraft. The build and radio pairing for the BNF version of the model is extremely quick. Figuring out the safe program settings will add some time getting acclimated to those features for 1st timers, but even that is not bad. New planes with gyro's make for tame maiden flights and overall smooth scale flying. That is a good thing when cruising around and landing on water airfields. The plane handles and maneuvers well during taxiing, take offs, and landings; however, water steering at slower speeds require a tad bit of ailerons to level the wings. My maiden flight went quite well with a greased landing. The plane has adequate power and a noticeable motor / prop sound. I will likely add the navigation lighting to the model for dusk flying. Battery used 3s 2200 mA packs. This plane along with my Flyzone ****** are definite winners on the water, in the air, and in the hangar.

Wheels

Changed the stock wheels too 2 3/4 dia. Also changed the nose wheel too one of the stock wheels I took off.Model now flies very well off of grass.I think Flaps would be a great addition for the water take off and landings. If you slow down too much when landing it drops like a rock.I think that Flaps would make for better take offs on both water and land.It just seems to stick to the water like glue.I will think about adding flaps.Otherwise I like the Plane.Lots of fun.

Sweet Thang

Haven’t tried the water yet but it flew great off a paved strip. Having “wrestled” with the AR636 AS3X gains (with no help from Horizon), I would recommend anyone who is not a expert flyer to pay the little bit more and get the BNF version. Lots of fun to fly. Nice airplane!

Icon A5

Due to saltwater flying I relocated the aileron servos to the top of the wing.I use baby rash cream which is water resistant to seal the canopy.I use the top of a plastic test tube to shield the rudder servo from the sea water. One year down the line I'm still having fun flight it in the Bay of Islands New Zealand.Big attraction to the local coffee bloke who parks on the beach Win win for all!

Released too soon

Purchased the Icon A5 from MRC summer of 2017. The package arrived with the canopy unrestrained in the box and the nose damaged by being pressed hard into the packaging foam. But it flies and who wants to hassle with customer service. As with the other 4 AS3X Aircraft I own, I experienced uncommanded control movement. Changed out the receiver, all is well on that score. This is a beautiful plane that flies well, but not off water. Lack of water rudder allows taxi upwind only, unless you are real patient. Each take off and landing will leave about a cup of water in the fuse. So after two landings you are done for the day due to damp reliever. I sealed all seams and the nose gear hatch to no avail.. It looks like the water is entering through the canopy seals.. with a 3s 2000 bat the bow rides low in the water with splash up over the canopy during taxi, takeoff and landing.. I rigged a water rudder off of the air rudder that allows straight track with less water over the canopy but it still takes on water.. A wet receiver creates some interesting flights. When the weather allows I will try the fixed gear..
