FMS LED Firefly
FMS LED Firefly is a cool plane the LED lights are out of this world I took the plane to the club field and everybody love the lights. ordered the plane and had it it no time Thanks Motion RC
After reporting the miss-assembly, I was sent a new fuselage. After putting the motor/servos/etc into the new fuselage, the aircraft performs much better. (miss-installation was 90 deg rotation of the "motor board" https://www.motionrc.com/products/fms-led-firefly-motor-board ) Correct is with the thin portion (seen from front) down. Also I used the recommended method (found in a Youtube Review) for removing slop from the "ailerons" Pull the wingtips and pull the lighting wires out of the way. Install the control horn pieces with their screw. Appx 60 deg around the horn, install a second screw. (either way around works, but more than 60 deg around would not allow you to put the new screws in with the wingtips installed on the wing) Pull the screws, remove the control horn then re-install the wires and wingtips using the 2 screws instead of just one. You will find that the slop in the wingtips is almost completely eliminated (instead of almost 1/3 inch of free up-down movement at the trailing edge) The airplane now does a nice straight takeoff and has no issue with being able to be trimmed for consistent straight and level flight at all throttle settings.
The plane arrived looking very nice, but I noted an unusual thrust offset of appx 5 deg left. I've seen odd thrust lines before, so I assembled and test flew it. The plane took a HARD left immediately n the wheels leaving the ground. It was able to be trimmed and controlled and actually flew reasonably well, but reacted significantly to changes in throttle. I contacted motion and asked if the left thrust was normal or if its possible the motor mount was installed improperly. They confirmed the thrust line was not correct. MotionRC contacted Horizon and I was sent a new fuselage. I have not transferred the motor/servos/etc to the new fuselage yet. I did pull the motor from the original fuselage and there is visible difference in the installation of the plastic motor mounts in the fuselages. I would probably have rated the model 5 stars without the miss-assembly. Ability for the model to successfully fly with the extreme incorrect thrust line points to it being a very stable aircraft. The only other item of concern is significant play in the "ailerons" (pivoting wingtips) making the model change trim in flight. This has been reported in a youtube review with what appears to be an easy fix.
Just got it put together
Firefly build and fly
(please note that I don't tend to give I bought the receiver-ready version. it was fairly easy to assemble with a couple of caveats. When putting the horizontal stabilizers on the tail, you can put in one half and connect the LED pretty easily. Getting the second LED connection in place without impeding that side is a little harder. The plastic fasteners to attach the wing are very nice, but are offset by having to figure out how to get the mess of wires (both the wing ailerons and the LED wires to the controller) to not be in the way makes me less inclined to ever take the wing off. Fortunately, it fits in my car without taking off the wing. It flies great. The wingtip ailerons are novel, but function well. I haven't flown this plane in full night yet, so cannot comment on its visibility, but it seems quite bright in a dark room.
The lights are all it has going for it
It's a very unique plane but there isn't much excitement flying this except at night with the lights flashing. Not aerobatic at all and it's not really a Sunday flyer either. Aileron design is a cool idea but the performance of them is not worth the look. Probably the most difficult foamie that I've ever flown in terms of precision. Maybe my expectations are too high from flying 3D balsa but I feel like I'm not in 100% control when I fly it.
My new favorite plane....
I received my Firefly yesterday and built it last night. I went straight to the field after work so I could maiden it and Wow was I impressed.... I got a trim flight and a ring it out flight before the sun went down, and then the fun began... This is the nicest flying low wing plane I've ever flown. I could find no bad habits with this plane. I got 2 night flights on it and it was awesome looking in the air. I just wish it had better lighting for head on approaches but it will do as long as I have the first setting so I can see the red and green tips well. It was so stable that you'd think I had a gyro in it... Which I will soon thanks to Motion carrying the Lemon/Admiral Gyros now.. I cant wait to go again tomorrow night. If you want a great flying night plane, This is your bird.... Thanks Motion RC and FMS for this treat to have in my hanger....
