F/A-18C Hornet "Base Gray" with 9-Blade 90mm EDF Jet from Freewing - ARF PLUS - FJ31421A+

Version Info: This is the ARF+ version for pilots who wish to install their own power system. All primary electronics including servos and landing gear retracts come pre-installed, just add your own power system (EDF, motor, and ESC) to begin flying.

Over ten years ago, Freewing began developing their first American 90mm EDF, the F/A-18E Super Hornet. Made of EPS foam and sporting a plastic five blade fan, that model was one of the first 90mm PNPs to demonstrate Freewing’s dreams, and it set the stage for their evolution. Having partnered with us at Motion RC for the past seven years, we’ve all been humbly privileged to expand the Foam EDF Jet’s place in the RC hobby and earn the business of customers worldwide. Thank you for your continued feedback, excitement, and trust!

To celebrate Freewing’s Eleventh anniversary, we are proud to announce an all-new 90mm F/A-18C Hornet, complete with all the latest features common to modern era EDFs in our Super Scale series. Be sure to save a summer slot for the Freewing F/A-18C, the quintessential 90mm Hornet on the planet!

4th time is the charm

Ok, this is based upon the 4th FW f-18 and a revised review to the second and third aircraft. The fist was a Blue Angeles livery and is still flying very well. I must say after making some changes to this last one it is flying so very well. It now is doing everything it should and then some. The 2nd and 3rd only flew for 2 minutes and then went on a rampage of their own. No it wasn’t radio failure. The second lost control due to what I believe were bad servos in the elevator and the third was due to a ball joint clevis breaking due to bad casting or possibly age and heat crystalizing the plastic. Any way, I replace the ball joints with metal pin clevises and I reinforced the rod using a little thicker metal. I have now had 4 flights on this newer one and the first two flight were 2 minutes each just to make sure there was nothing to go wrong with the batteries. No much was required on trim the only trim was a little left and about 40 points of up trim. I must say I set the elevators to 7.5mm in lieu of what was called for in the manual. They were right and I was wrong, but no big deal. I did use on the first flight the standard power plant. On the first F-18 it seemed more than powerful. But, for some unknown reason this one did not perform near as well (2/3 or the power). So I placed a Mercury power plant and now it flies just as well as the first if not even better. It is a lot quieter and smoother for one thing. I found that the battery on this one required me to go as far aft as possible. This is based upon a 6S 5100 man 70C Scorpion battery. The invert is almost as good as a pattern airplane. The loops are very large and predictable. The knife edge is good with rudder used to about 70%. The landings are very predictable, with maybe a little floating. I will try to see bye moving the battery a 1/2” forward will help keep the nose now a little more on the next flight. I hate to change since the inverted is so well behaved. All in all I have found this airplane to behave quite well and have no reason for not recommending it to the hobby.

Turbine converted

Plane really rocks! Very easy to handle and landings are predictable. Converted to KingTech K-30 turbine, 32oz fuel, all else on the little jet is stock. Re-glued elevator mounts with foamtac cg is and controls are per manual. posted on hobby squawk, also video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWn3rI_WVhM&feature=share&fbclid=IwAR1btMjMUaQzj2HTk4HtStWqJu-NgAVtrrHn9QRlv42XlhOx4b78XX5-Igc

Not so good

I would give this plane a better review, however, it crashed on its maiden. Why you ask? Well the elevator servos are not the best for such a large flying stab. After about 2 minutes of flying and in a right hand high bank turn, the elevator servo on the right side gave up. Almost was able to recover the plane, however, after the front line pass the left side servo gave up as well. It was a total mess. I have no idea why Freewing thinks that a small servo in this airframe will work on this large of a stabilizer. I will most likely try again, but you can bet your A— I will buy different servos for the stabs at least.

Great plane and a keeper!

The plane has excellent quality and is a great flyer. I think Freewing has had a bad lot of servos in the F-18. My ARF+ had stab servo ratcheting when the stab was moved and the right flap ratcheted without any control inputs. I replaced the stab servos with spare parts from my FW F-15 and the flap servos from my FW A-4. The servos worked perfectly and the plane flew without a problem. I also bypassed the blue box except for lighting. I really like this plane but make sure you test all the servos with a tester for at least 30 minutes. I appreciate all the effort MotionRC and Freewing put in these planes and will be a customer for a long time! The plane is a keeper!

Beautiful Class act EDF Jet

I have been working on mine to give it a new livery color face lift. Haven't finished yet...so I can't report on flight statistics...yet. But it's overall form, fit, and finish is exquisite and a work of art. Well engineered and all top class components and electronics. Yet another Top Gun classy EDF from Motion RC and Freewing. F/A-18C Base Grey PNP

Well thought out plane, great foam quality and finish and scale details, such as the flap system, antennas & probes. Very sturdy landing gear, improved stabilator mounting hardware, spacious batter compartment and mounting plate that be unscrewed for some cable management. Would have been a 5-star review if weren't for the piece of junk called the MCB-E/MFCB/"Blue Box" integrated control board. Bought a PNP and ARF Plus, lost the PNP from an un-commanded roll & yaw, and the ARF Plus ailerons failed on the stand. Taking it out of the equation, the aileron servos worked as they should, plugged into the control board and it was a disaster waiting to happen.
