HobbyZone Champ S+ 694mm (27") Wingspan - RTF
27" Wingspan Hobbyzone Champ S+ Ready to Fly (RTF) - HBZ5400
This is an all new high tech version of the classic Hobbyzone Champ beginner RC plane. The Champ S+ truly has very large shoes to fill but the guys at Motion RC think it does all that and more with features like auto leveling, auto landing, and panic recovery to help you learn quickly. The Champ S+ includes a GPS self guidance system and gyro to help accomplish all of these features and help you learn to fly an RC plane quickly. All of this technology at this price is unheard of. However, the technology is just the starting point. While the technology makes it much easier to learn, it can be turned down and eventually turned off should yours newly acquired skills lead you to want full control at all times. This is truly the golden era of beginner RC airplanes. It wasn't all that long ago that the only things an RC trainer or beginner plane had to help you learn to fly is a buddy box where you had to rely on someone with experience to help you. Those days are behind us with this new SAFE Plus GPS technology.
Features to allow a beginner to learn to fly an RC plane on their own:
While in beginner mode, a beginner new to RC planes will simply need to let go of the sticks on the radio to signal the plane to return to straight and level flight. As you learn to fly your beginner RC plane, you will want to try the more advanced modes. If you get the Champ S+ into a Jam, simply switch back to beginner mode and release the control sticks on your radio and the plane will again return to straight and level flight. In our opinion this is one of the best features of this plane.
The HobbyZone Champ S+ allows you to land this beginner RC plane at the push of a button. This takes all stress out of landing. You don't need to use it all the time. If it is too windy and you are worried about damaging the plane, simply use auto land. As you become more of an expert, you will use auto-land less and less. Note - the Auto land feature does require calibration of the compass. Please see the manual for the process.
Auto stabilizationAuto Stabilization will keep the plane steady in the wind and keep a beginner pilot from putting the plane into extreme angles. It will keep you from dipping a wing too low and putting the nose too high and causing a stall. Again, you can turn this down as your skills progress
Many beginner RC planes have been lost because a new pilot flew too far away to maintain visual orientation. when turned on, this technology will not allow the plane to get too far away from the point of takeoff. The Hobbyzone Champ S+ will simply turn itself around and start flying back to you. It will dip and wing for a moment to signal you have the control again. Still worried? Put the plane into a holding pattern (see blow).
With the push of a button the Hobbyzone Champ S+ will fly back to the point of takeoff and circle the sky above. This is fantastic if a wind suddenly kicks up or you get nervous and need a little help.

I got the plane and now I can't stop flying it at my nearby park
READ BEFORE YOU BUY A CHUMP
This plane is marketed as a trainer. They tried to make it fool proof but actually made it much more difficult to fly on many levels. Starting with the build, the fuse is as thin and weak as a styrofoam cup and will take not abuse whatsoever. Im surprised the motor stays in it during accelleration. The linear micro servos for the alerons are fully exposed to any debris that may kick up during landings. The bottom load battery hatch magnet is not even close to strong enough and opens 5 seconds into the flight. This happenes every flight and i did about 25 flights. On one occasion the battery fell out and augered the plane into the ground from about 100' up. Destroyed and rebuilt. The whole build is just plain cheesey. Now for the technology of SAFE and virtual fence. Its supposed to have been bind from the factory. Mine was not and it takes several tries to get it. You also may have to rebind from time to time. A bit of a pain. The SAFE works perfectly and the plane snaps back to the correct attitude in a hurry. The virtual fence however is only 450'. It seems a bit closer to me. The problem is the plane wants to climb to 100' which actually makes the fence closer. By the time you get your bearings the plane hits the fence a automatically changes direction and you have to reorient again. No flaps means the plane moves quickly toward the fence which can be a problem. For a beginner, they wont be able to figure out whats going on. In beginner mode the safe almost takes too much authority away to the point its hard to stay within the fence and make tight turns. Intermediate mode seems to work the best. In advanced mode it flies with the authority of a 3D and a beginner will quickly lose control and likely crash. If you fly this you better have wide open space. I mean wide open. If the plane hits the virtual fence it comes back and you have no control for a few seconds. But remember, it cant see and It can put you in a tight spot and then just hand over control. Mine flew straight toward a tree and gave back control way too late for me to save it. They can keep the virtual fence. When i tried to use the auto land feature it was s if i turned the transmitter off. The plane just fell out of the sky. I was lucky to pull it out of its dive. If your considering the RTF because you get a transmitter for another $20.00 you should reconsider. Its a $20 transmitter. If you want a good trainer for the same money or less, buy the UMX Timber. Everything about the Timber is better. Its a STOL with flaps, wing tip droops and leading edge slats that allow it to fly ultra slow. It has SAFE but no virtual fence so you have all the time you need to make decisions. It has enough dihederal to help auto level. The build quality is much better and it has protective covers over the micro servos and top load battery. Its all around a stout little build with thicker more rigid foam thats just as light as the Champ but can take a little more in the way of hard landings. I fly my Timber with a DX6 and with its outstanding flight characteristics its simply a joy to fly.
Good Airplane, Juat one problem...
This is a good parkflier and can handle a decent crosswind, for mine, the lipo batter would not charge at all. The included charger I got was ****. I got a hobby grade charger from Duratrax, and the battery would not charge on that one because of cells/type error. It turns out that the battery on mine was not balanced. I got a new battery and on the stock charger, still wouldn't work. Get a hobby grade charger before getting this airplane, it will save you some time, and maybe even a lipo fire.
