Fairchild Model 24 Argus 2357mm (92.79") Wingspan from Black Horse - Balsa Wood ARF - BHFA000

The Fairchild Model 24, also known as the Fairchild 24 Argus, is a four-seat, single-engine monoplane designed as a light transport aircraft in the 1930s. It was used by the United States Army Air Corps as and by the Royal Air Force. It was developed from previous Fairchild models and became a successful civil and military utility aircraft.

Designed for operations from relatively unimproved grass airfields, the sturdy undercarriage construction used a vertical oil dampened cylinder above the wheel with a pivoting strut attached to the lower fuselage. The result was a complex but robust undercarriage that could absorb the large loads imposed by rough field operations and could be adapted for the fitting of twin floats for water-based operations.

The model is scaled to approximately 1:4.7 and attention was paid to a true to original appearance and best flight characteristics. The model can be operated using an electric power system or with an internal combustion engine about 30-35cc displacement.

Nice Plane but flawed execution

A potentially beautiful model but so far I’ve encountered a number of construction flaws. The black trim on one wing was cut 3/8” lower than the other. After trimming the offending wing several spots of bare balsa were exposed. I’ll have to cannibalize some covering from the horizontal stab to cover those spots. Also when mounting the aileron servos I found that the hard points for mounting the control horns on the ailerons were misplaced. I’ll have to pull back the covering and install my own. Ugh! I’m also not impressed with the ball joints for the control linkages. They are overly stiff when ******* down. I may end up replacing them. Eventually I think that I’ll end up with a really nice plane but I hope not to encounter any more construction flaws.

Beautiful Plane with a flaw in execution

My initial impression of this ARF was quite positive. And I look forward to assembling and flying it. However as I started working on the wings I noticed that on one wing the black trim was wrapped way beyond the leading edge. I had to cut 3/8" of trim off that wing so that both wings would look the same when viewed from the front. Unfortunately that exposed two small areas of bare balsa wood. These I think I can patch with covering stripped from the horizontal stab. But for this significant flaw in execution I would have given it 5 stars.

TRES BEAU MODELE.

VERY BEAUTIFUL MODEL. I chose this device for its beautiful look, thin and solid at the same time in a particularly well chosen color, with an original front end. I regret a few points not really up to the whole. - The application of the Oracover has faults and scratches abnormal when the packaging is well done. - The depth rods are too short and require a repositioning the servos. - There are errors in the supplies. - Some holes for the hinges are badly made. Except for the Oracover, these small anomalies can be resolved by all model makers. *** I WANT TO REPORT AN INADMISSIBLE POINT ***, which I have already reported to the Motionrc staff, from which I await a response. The "" "Admiral GP26 6330-245kV Brushless Motor" "" is recommended to equip the Fairchild. If I do not doubt its capacities to propel the model, I can say that the assembly plan once the engine fixed on its support, forget to explain in what way it is necessary to proceed to install the false engine plate, the hood and the propeller. Quite simply, without destroying the motor plate, it is not possible. (I do not accept this massacre, the manufacturer must assume the choice of motorization) ---------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- * PLEASE TAKE INTO ACCOUNT YOU ALSO, * * THIS STATE OF FACT TO FOLLOW THE INFORMATION AND * * TO REMEDY. * ---------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- Sorry for the continuation, it is necessary to remedy the problem, impossible to make fly a model which is not suitably finished and it will be after the covid 19 (not for tomorrow .. !!!)

Excellent ARF-- a new standard for scale fidelity!

What a beautiful and impressive scalie! As a modeler with 50 years of experience, I have to say I've not built an ARF that was any better than this one, for scale accuracy, good construction, and unexpected niceties that are not found in other ARFs of this caliber. Holds up well against another favorite of mine, the Hangar 9 quarter-scale Cub. The Black Horse Fairchild comes with hinged doors that open, a ***** radial engine molding, a two-piece wing with joiner tube and functional wing struts, functional landing gear with spring-loaded shock struts, steerable scale tailwheel assembly, airfoiled tail surfaces, a large windshield hatch for easy access to the fuel tank and batteries, scale instrument panel with dials, full hardware set including fuel tank, and even two seats for the cabin. The covering and color scheme are truly gorgeous, and expertly applied with no wrinkles or bad seams. The only negative is the ABS wheelpants, which really can use some fiberglass reinforcement on the inside for better durability. I mounted a Saito 180 in my Fairchild, and I can't wait for the spring weather to arrive so I can fly it! What a beauty!

Fairchild

Nice kit, like the Blackhorse models seem to be. Haven't built yet.

Built and a beauty

Finally finished the build and the plane made its maiden flight yesterday morning and it was great. Aside from a little trim the plane flew great. It definitely gets noticed by the other pilots. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great flying as well as looking plane.

Second time lucky

Happy to say that the second plane was received in excellent condition, first one suffered two area’s of shipping damage. Have yet to start the build but did a thorough inspection and everything seems OK. Covering is excellent and the bits and pieces appear first rate, looking forward to the build

Design Execution

Everything looked above board, until I removed the components and began the building sequence. The hinge points poked through both flap surfaces, which required repair. Further, the 67mm flap hinge points were incorrectly identified in the instructions and one end had to be shortened to prevent protruding through the flap a second time. Once the wing panels were complete, not only did the wing trim striping not match the top fuselage trim, the wing panels covered a portion of the black and white fuselage cabin trim. While there are provisions for two elevator servos, there is only one pushrod for rudder control. My preference would be for a pull-pull system.

Black Horse Fairchild 24 Argus

Box arrived in excellent condition. Double boxed. All parts were individually wrapped or in separate boxes. All items were taped down to prevent movement. All parts were in perfect shape. Initial inspection showed top notch construction. All covering was tight and all painted items were flawless. I have started construction and can say this is no novice assembly. Manual leaves a bit to be desired and needs close review of each step. Each step needs to be mocked up first to be sure all parts fit properly before final assembly. I made the mistake of using tread lock on the landing gear legs and when I noticed an error and had to remove the screws 2 broke the blind nuts loose which required opening the lower fuselage to get a cut off wheel in to cut off the screw heads. This damaged the fuselage and required a rebuild to make it right. The hardware is a bit low grade and I replaced some of it with better hardware. Overall however I find the model itself to be well made and a great project for someone with a good knowledge of building to work through some of the shortfalls of the construction manual.
