Ryan ST-A Special 2350mm (92.52") Wingspan from Black Horse - Balsa Wood ARF - BHRY00

The Ryan STs were a series of two seat, low-wing monoplane aircraft built in the United States by the Ryan Aeronautical Company. They were used as sport aircraft, as well as trainers by flying schools and the militaries of several countries.

The ST-A was further developed as the ST-A Special, with a super-charged 150HP Menasco C4-S engine of increased power.

The model is scaled to approximately 1:3.8 and attention was paid to a true to original appearance and best flight characteristics. The model was designed for electric drives but can also be operated with an internal combustion engine about 30cc displacement.

An excellent ARF kit.

I have just begun to assemble this ARF kit and so far I'm delighted with the quality, fit, and finish of the product. The covering is like glass and it's obvious someone took their time with it. Even though as always I took my covering iron and heat gun to it prior to assembly, there really was very little work than needed to be done. Just rubbing my hand and fingers over the bones of this plane one gets a reassuring sense of a sturdy and solid product. The oleo filled landing gears seems slightly over-engineered for this plane but that's better than under-engineered. I will add to my review as I complete and fly the thing. There are some negatives. For example, the description of the hardware in the manual (which is a good one btw) doesn't always correspond with what's been included. So far though, that hasn't been an obstacle and the included parts have been working perfectly. I have no doubt I will be purchasing more Black Horse products. One word of caution though, even though the manual is good and the parts fit together very well, some ARFs (like this one or the other plane I'm assembling at the same time the Pitts SB-2) require some building skills. If like me, you've been in the hobby over 30 years and are used to building kits in the 1980s, then this kit will not be a difficult project.
